Camping

Dick and Cat wanted to go camping. Dick asked Bonnie. Dick asked around, then somehow the word got out and it was a CAMPING TRIP.

Which he's okay with, really. He doesn't get much chance to hang around with other kids.

They pick a spot a good distance from the bar, near enough to the lake that washing and swimming can happen, not so close to the forest that demon bunnies are a severe threat, and set about pitching a camp for the weekend, or whenever they all get bored...

Autor laughs, shaking his head. "Good point, good point," he says. "I've never heard of Gotham. Do you like the city?"

Genuine surprise because - not only are there tons of people in bar who come from Gotham, but there's at least one on this camping trip.

"Yeah, I like it okay. It's not exactly Metropolis, but it's not bad."

"I haven't heard of either of those cities," Autor admits, holding his marshmallow too close to the coals. "What did you do in the circus?"

Dick leans over, puts his fingers under Autor's hand and pushes up, to indicate that the marshmallow should be higher.

"Trapeze. I'm an aerialist."

Autor blinks at their hands, and adjusts his grip on the skewer. "Oh, thanks. Trapeze, huh? That must require a lot of strength and flexibility. I've never seen an aerialist at work."

He tilts his head. "You never been to a circus?"

That sucks!

"Nope, sorry," Autor says, shrugging. "I've never been outside my small town, and people generally don't set up circuses there."

"What was your town like?" he asks, honestly curious.

Because he's never been to the sort of town circuses don't go to. Obviously.

"It's small, as I've said," Autor says, smiling a little. "We don't have electricity there. Or cars. My sphere of influence has to do with the academy of the arts, so there's a lot of music and ballet performances."

Dick considers this, and then brightens.

"Show business, then. That's like the circus."

"Just so," Autor says, nodding thoughtfully. "Do you miss traveling around with the circus?"

"Yeah," Dick says mildly, turning his attention to his s'more.

"I mean, wouldn't you miss your home if you left it?"

"Yes, of course," Autor says immediately. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to bring up bad memories."

"Nah, I don't have any" (many) "bad memories of the circus. Just miss it."

"That's completely understandable," Autor says, affixing another marshmallow to his skewer. "What do you miss most about it?"

"Flying."

"Flying? Oh the trapeze?" Autor asks, holding his marshmallow near the coals again. "That must have been fun. Did you ever fall?"

Dick smirks, although not without the reflection that boy, these are a lot of questions.
