Camping

Dick and Cat wanted to go camping. Dick asked Bonnie. Dick asked around, then somehow the word got out and it was a CAMPING TRIP.

Which he's okay with, really. He doesn't get much chance to hang around with other kids.

They pick a spot a good distance from the bar, near enough to the lake that washing and swimming can happen, not so close to the forest that demon bunnies are a severe threat, and set about pitching a camp for the weekend, or whenever they all get bored...

So the tents are too big and heavy for a little person to lift up. But Fry is measuring where the pegs will go with a tapemeasure, and is lining them up ready.

"Hi, Fry," Autor says, carrying firewood. "Need some help?"

"Yes, unless you all want to sleep without a tent." Fry says.

Autor sets his firewood down by the pit and returns to Fry. "That wouldn't be ideal, no," he says. "How can I help?"

Fry looks up at him.

"Aren't you in charge of the erection? You're a patrol leader."

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2015-06-06 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Er," Autor says, sheepish. "I suppose I am. Well, scout Fry, are you finished measuring out where the pegs go?"
fry_sandhu: (age 6 techie)

Re: Pitching Camp

"Yes." Fry says. "It was the only bit of the tent I could carry."

"Well done," Autor says, eyeing the places where Fry has measured out. "Now we need to hammer the pegs into place, and we'll be in business. I'll be right back; I'm going to grab a hammer."

He heads over to the pile of tent makings and finds a hammer and a few pegs before returning to Fry. "All right, where's the first one needed?"

Fry looks up at him.

"Are you sure you know how to put up a tent?"

"I have no idea what I'm doing," Autor admits, and a blush takes over his features. "I was sort of playing it by ear."

Re: Pitching Camp

[personal profile] fry_sandhu 2015-06-07 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's stupid." Fry says. "If you don't know how to do it you should ask or go and read some instructions so it doesn't fall on us."

He's only seen it done once, and even he knows you don't bang the pegs in until the tent is being held upright.
herr_bookman: (embarassed)

Re: Pitching Camp

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2015-06-07 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"All right," Autor says, thoroughly chastened. "I'll go do that. You wouldn't happen to know how to put a tent up, would you? I'll find some instructions if not."
fry_sandhu: (age 6 techie)

Re: Pitching Camp

[personal profile] fry_sandhu 2015-06-07 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've watched. The pegs go in last." Fry says. "You have to lay out the canvas first without standing on it. Then you lay the poles on it, then two tall people pull the poles up and hold them while the others put the pegs in."

Re: Pitching Camp

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2015-06-07 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, we'll lay the canvas out flat and put the poles in, but we'll have to find someone else to hold the poles with me," Autor says, setting his hammer and pegs down. He crosses to the canvas and starts spreading it out. "Here, you grab that end and we can spread it out."

Fry tries, but the canvas is quite heavy, so it takes him a little while.

Re: Pitching Camp

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2015-06-07 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry, Fry," Autor says, lifting the canvas a little more easily. "Is it too heavy for you?"

[personal profile] herr_bookman 2015-06-07 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don't worry about it," Autor says, waving that off. He straightens his side of the canvas, and then crosses around to help Fry with his. "We're all a little mean sometimes."

Selina is trying to help, really. But see when she implied she'd been camping before, it was urban camping at best. That is to this is all new to her.

Fry has been measuring the pegs exactly but isn't strong enough to do any of the other bits.

If any kid here will have read the directions, Selina is pretty sure it's Fry.

"You have to lie out the canvas and then lie the poles on it." Fry says. "Without walking on it."
