Camping

Dick and Cat wanted to go camping. Dick asked Bonnie. Dick asked around, then somehow the word got out and it was a CAMPING TRIP.

Which he's okay with, really. He doesn't get much chance to hang around with other kids.

They pick a spot a good distance from the bar, near enough to the lake that washing and swimming can happen, not so close to the forest that demon bunnies are a severe threat, and set about pitching a camp for the weekend, or whenever they all get bored...

Autor has marshmallows, chocolate, graham crackers, and skewers available for anyone who wants to participate in the time-honored tradition of s'more making. He himself is trying--and failing--to toast a marshmallow.

"Not so close!" grins the red-head beside him, affixing a marshmallow from a separate bag to her skewer. "If it gets too close, it'll catch fire and turn black."

"That's what happened to my last three," Autor grumbles good-naturedly, his marshmallow already threatening to catch alight. Fire licks the edges, turning them black.

"Ah! That's too bad," Autor says, drawing the marshmallow back to inspect it. "How are you, Rae?"

"I'm good," she answers, contentedly. She's got her marshmallow on her skewer held near - but not too near, and not directly above - the flames, and is slowly turning it so it heats evenly.

"You want to toast slowly, so it heats all the way through. Else you get a pretty outside and a solid inside, or a burnt outside. You want it melty on the inside, toasty on the outside."

Autor watches her avidly, eating his marshmallow off his skewer. He replaces it with another and holds it out to the fire, trying to maintain the same distance that Rae has on hers.

"I've done this right before," he says, a touch sheepish. "Once." Autor turns his skewer slowly, watching the marshmallow brown. "Thanks for teaching me your technique."

"Up above the flames is too hot, you see? Heat rises, and the marshmallow'll burn too quick." Rae leans against Autor's shoulder, grinning. "It's like anything - you learn what to look for, as you go."

"How're you doing?"

"What is all of that?" The crackers look the most familiar, and of course she knows what chocolate is, but the white, fluffy stuff is strange to her.

In her hand is a small sausage on the end of a stick. Given how food here is cooked over the fire on sticks instead of a proper pot, this was the best way to go about it.

Autor turns to her with a smile, accidentally burning his marshmallow off of his stick. "Oh, shoot," he says, blowing out the lingering fire. "They're ingredients for s'mores. These are graham crackers, this is chocolate, and these are marshmallows. Would you like some?"

"I know what chocolate is." That was one of the first foods she'd tried in this place. "Maybe after having this."

She put the hotdog into the fire, watching it cook.

"I'm Autor, by the way," he says, gesturing with his skewer. "What's your name?"

"Gyda." She looked back to the fire, adjusting the stick so her hotdog wouldn't burn. In her hand was a bun used to hold onto the sausage when it was done cooking. "Is the marshmellow done?"

"Wow. I haven't had those in ages," Cat says taking a seat near Autor.

Autor beams at her, holding up his skewer--which has a charred marshmallow on it. "You're welcome to make a few if you like," he says, offering her another skewer.

"I think I can manage a few," she says slyly, accepting the skewer. "I'm cat."

She's not sure if she's meet him before but she does recognize him.

"I'm Autor," he says, offering her the bag of marshmallows next. "We've met before but I don't think we exchanged names. Do you know how to roast marshmallows? I sure don't."

"I thought you looked familiar, Artor" she replies, adding an R by accident (silly Americans) and wagging a free finger from a fist full of marshmallows. "I think the trick is to not get the marshmallow too close to the fire. Unless you like crispy marshmallow, then go for it."

Gavroche's marshmallow, despite his best efforts, is on fire.

So is Autor's. "Not having much luck with these, I see," he remarks, blowing out his marshmallow. "Me neither."

"They're still edible", he says, biting through the charred layer. "...sort of."

"Sort of," Autor agrees, nibbling on his own blackened sugar. "How was your Cubefall, Gavroche?"

"Pretty good. I only changed for the one day, and I went with the fox."

"Hold it down there, look," Dick says, pointing to his own marshmallow over some glowing embers at the base of the fire, rather than in the flames themselves."

"Over the coals, then?" Autor asks, lowering his skewer. "I'm glad you know how to toast marshmallows. I certainly don't. I'm Autor, by the way."

"Yeah, I used to toast them a lot when we had campfires in the circus."
